El Khat is a homemade “junkyard” band led by multi-instrumentalist Eyal El Wahab. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, El Wahab performs on one-of-a-kind DIY custom instruments that he has built himself out of, essentially, garbage. As a child of the Yemeni diaspora who grew up in Jaffa, Israel, it’s a practice that harkens back to his family’s homeland, where even rubbish can be put to use. Drawing influence from Yemeni folk and pop records of the 1960s, El Wahab and El Khat create mesmerizing, otherworldly, retro-futurist sounds rooted simultaneously in tradition and modernity.
