The latest boundary-busting project from renowned Canadian Yiddish hip-hop provocateur, Josh “Socalled†Dolgin. Gephilte is a jam-band experiment in Yiddish funk. Branching off from his internationally renowned hip-hop project and taking cues from his funk/klezmer supergroup Abraham Inc, Socalled has brought together an ensemble of virtuosos in order to explore Yiddish repertoire in a more free, borderless way, less concerned with stylistic “legitimacy†and more concerned with using the incredible Yiddish repertoire in order to groove out and make audiences move. The band is made up of jazz master Alex Moxon, beat-maven Mike Essoudry, bass prodigy Caylan Penny, saxophonist Julian Selody (Lemon Bucket Orchestra) and violinist Erica Miller (Ottawa Symphony). Together they create an ensemble of unrivalled adaptability and swing, finding their repertoire in Yiddish theatre music, Hassidic nigunim, klezmer and Jewish popular song to provide a rocking, genre-bending zone of musical joy and reflection.
