Directed by Lex Gillespie (USA, 2024) – 85 Minutes
Affectionately nicknamed the “Borscht Belt,” the “Sour Cream Sierras” and the “Jewish Alps,” the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York was a vacation destination which, from the 1920s to the 1960s, numbered 500 family-run Jewish resorts and hotels that, sadly, have since been demolished. Employing a treasure trove of home movies, archival photos, postcards and interviews with former guests and staff, director Lex Gillespie (The Mamboniks, TJFF2019) resurrects this vibrant slice of Jewish American life that inspired films and TV series including Dirty Dancing and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
