Galeet Dardashti “Monajat”
Galeet Dardashti is a performer, anthropologist, and advocate of Middle Eastern and North African Jewish culture. In her latest album release and live concert program, “Monajat,” Dardashti uses digital technology to sing with remixed samples of her grandfather, Younes Dardashti, one of Iran’s most famous singers in the 1950s and 60s and a devout Jew. This live concert reinvents the reflective musical ritual of Selihot (penitential prayers) with a soundscape of original music performed with an acclaimed ensemble of Middle Eastern and jazz musicians. At this very fraught time in the Middle East, this project reminds us of the deep historical and cultural connections between Jews and Muslims over many generations.
